Professor Alan Mikhail, chair of the Yale History Department, will discuss his recent book God’s Shadow: Sultan Selim, His Ottoman Empire, and the Making of the Modern World. The book examines the overlooked importance of the Ottoman Empire in the shaping of modern Europe. And, with intriguing illustrations, focuses on the 15th and early 16th century rise of Sultan Selim and his effect on European monarchs, Columbus and other explorers, and the thinking of Martin Luther. Q&A to follow.

Members ONLY.
